About the ranterino
To improve specific literacy and grammar skills for ESL primary school students studying in Hong Kong, students in my school were first consulted about what they were interested in reading.
Ranterino was born in a FUN, MEMORABLE and ENGAGING way to help with three specific problems that young learners in Hong Kong struggle with:
i: Common spelling patterns
ii: Common sight word spelling anomalies
iii: Using the simple past tense
After trying out some initial stories with students, using very rough, hand drawn pictures to accompany them, we realised that the Ranterino could indeed become a very powerful tool for helping students to develop specific language and literacy skills whilst also developing a real love of reading stories in English.
A digital version of Ranterino was therefore created.
To make a systematic series of levelled stories to cover the different reading abilities of the students, we progressed with the website, youtube videos and ebooks.
To encourage self-directed reading, offline, printed activity-based storybooks were made.
Games have been designed to review the story content and language features (such as phonics, spellings, vocabulary, grammar) whilst allowing children to develop their creativity.
